This trimester includes works by Shakespeare and the Metaphysical poets Marvell and Donne. We will be investigating the substance and form of these artists’ works, as well as working through various critical approaches to literature. Our goal is to be able to contend with difficult texts in a critical manner. Questions we’ll explore include:

~ What makes a classic? How can we interrogate this concept while respecting the time-tested literature to which the term applies?

~ How have literary expressions of the self evolved throughout British literary history?

~ What influence do genre, style, and thematic concerns wield on literary works?
